Fishing News & Updates
OUR ICE IS GOOD HERE IN NORTHEN MINNESOTA!! COME VISIT US!!
Well this isn't an excuse...BUT I forgot about this page on our website and I last wrote on it in mid November!!
Cass Lake didn't freeze over until December 5th which is REALLY late. We had Early Ice, Northern fishermen going out on foot with only 3-4 inches of ice pulling their shacks with them. Because of our lack of snow cover
they said it was like walking on a sheet of glass placed over the lake and you could see everything below. Unfortunately since they could see all the fish below,
That meant the fish could see all of the humans actions above the ice also!! We finally got some colder weather and with a lite snowfall by mid January, Ron was able to
get our fish houses out on the lake January 4th. However we were recommending that people bring 4-wheelers or snowmobiles to get around on the lake.
Early ice fishing was good with a number of
perch and some really nice walleyes being caught, then with all the weird weather patterns this winter fishing
became "fishing" with the spotty irregular patterns of normal fishing. The winter season overall and our winter guests has been wonderful with almost 100% of people coming back again from
last year, and adding a 3-4% increase in new bookings we have been booked full every weekend!! Thank you everyone and we hope you enjoyed your stay with us and that we see you again next year!
Well our 2011 season is over and it was wonderful, busy and very fast paced! The fishing remained overall decent for most of the season with a few slow weeks thrown in to remind us that we are still humans and fishing is still fishing! The weather is still beautiful with temps in the high 70's - 85 degrees this first week of October. We are wrapping up everything around here and closing the cabins, the docks are out and we are getting ready for our 2011-2012 WINTER ICE FISHING SEASON!! Last year was a great first year and this year looks to be another busy winter, call if you are thinking about booking yor ice fishing reservation as we are getting calls earlier then last year! Hope to see you all, December 02-04, 2011 at the 19th Annual St. Paul Ice Fishing & Winter Sports Show.
Wow what an opener! The fishing is great and our guest are having the time of their lives catching some of the largest walleyes that they have ever caught on the lake and many of them are catching the largest number of big walleyes then ever! We have guests that have caught 4-6 walleyes over the 27 inch mark. One guest who hasn't fished in over 25 years, just bought his first fishing rod on his way up here and he pull out a 30 inch walleye! The weather had been really decent and the fishing remains very good even 5 weeks into the 2011 season! Check out our Photo Gallery to see just a few of these years lunkers!
April 30, We had nicer weather the last few days and with that went the rest of the ice on the lake. It sounds so nice to hear the waves on shore and the loons calling again! It means that summer is quickly approaching and we will be in full swing around the resort in another few short weeks!
Well the snow was gone and we got a nice rain fall mid April so we thought we were all set for another early spring. Then mother nature gave us a nice 4 inches of heavy wet snow last night April 15. The ice is out about 200 yards from the shore and it is moving around and breaking up. The robins are here, so once this last snow melts we should be getting closer to the Fishing Opener of 2011. Come back to see how the fishing is going this spring!
Ron Miller is operating and
guiding a new ice fishing business out of Wishbone Resorts private landing on the northern side of Cass Lake.
A nice afternoons catch
of perch. (week of Feb. 6th, 2011)
Finally we have something decent to say about the ice condition on the north side of Cass Lake.
Ron has been able to get thru and past the slush pockets and is plowed out all the way to Buck Bar. We also had a visitor
Jeff Sundin who offers Northern Minnesota Fishing Reports
and he had this to say about his trip to Cass Lake:
"Ron Miller of Wishbone and Chad Benson are teaming up and ramping up for the up-coming late ice Perch fishing on Cass Lake.
Ron greeted us on the ice and helped us get the lay of the land, pointing out locations of the plowed roads that they've already finished.
After that, hoping to find a great new school of "un-tapped fish", I and Arne went on a little fish scouting mission. As it turned out,
fishing wasn't the highlight of our afternoon, instead it was the fantastic ice conditions that wowed us. Settling snow, sub-zero temperatures
and even simple evaporation have combined to clear up all but the most stubborn slush spots. The network of roads that they've cleared from
Wishbone's private landing out into the Western portion of the lake is clear, dry and headed toward some really good, classic winter Perch spots.
Wishbone Resort and Chad's Rentals will have rental shelters and lodging available, so if you're thinking about a late season Perch trip, this is a great time to get in touch."
These young boys know how to fish also! The weather was warming up and so were the perch week of Feb. 6th, 2011.
Early January fishing results in a few very nice walleyes being caught.
